I contacted Roku support about this but they told me I have to contact TCL about the issue - I didnt bother as talking 1 support in a day was enough and havent gotten around to it.Due to either how the Slingbox is set up on the sending end or how the SlingPlayer channel operates (I think it may be the latter, as the correct aspect ratio appears on my computer and phone through the respective apps; this however is irrelevant) the 16:9 output on the television is in 4:3 aspect ratio (the reason why its outputting in 4:3 is irrelevant for purposes of this issue).
In the past, in order to correct this problem, as it was a bit out of my technical reach to fix it at the Slingbox end, I was able to set the Picture size setting in the Advanced picture settings to Stretch, which would stretch the 4:3 picture to fill the 16:9 screen (and thus, display in the correct aspect ratio, albeit with some minimal amounts of quality loss; its not a big deal to me necessarily). However, since about a couple months ago, when I try to use this workaround, it seems the Stretch option ends up stretching the picture twice; once on the 4:3 image to make it 16:9 and then again on the stretched 16:9 image so that the 4:3 area of that image is displayed filling the 16:9 area. After dealing with this issue for a while (or, not dealing with it, as it has impacted my viewing of the Slingbox in question so much that I instead opt to stream through my computer now in order to get the correct aspect ratio), I decided to look into it deeper. I tried the same testing with 4:3 videos on the YouTube channel and local broadcastantenna transmissions of a 4:3 digital subchannel. Skitch Aspect Ratio Problem Update Back OnThus, rather than an issue with how the SlingPlayer channel handles aspect ratios, I believe it is an issue with the Roku software (or, at least with the version sent to my TV in an update) which was sent through an automatic update back on February 1; the latest version according to my Roku TVs update menu in Settings. Ignore what programming is playing in the images, or the flash from my smartphone in the images (it was late), as that is all irrelevant to the problem I am experiencing. This first image shows what the image looks like, in AutoDirect ratio settings, of a program run through the SlingPlayer channel through this Slingbox. The program being broadcast is aired in 4:3 over a 16:9 feed in its original aspect ratio, and the 16:9 image has been squeezed to 4:3 by the SlingPlayer channel. This double-squeezed image helps to illustrate the issue clearly. Prior to the February update (and on any other TV in normal circumstances), when the Stretch option is selected, the program would stretch to a regular 4:3 aspect ratio and the black bars currently inside the 4:3 image would fill the 16:9 space. For 16:9 programming, the video would fill the screen properly. The second image shows what the image looks like under Stretch settings, as indicated. Not only has the Roku TV cut off the bars imposed by the SlingPlayer channel, it has also stretched the image to remove the bars which were broadcast from the 16:9 image, thus double-stretching the 4:3 image in the broadcast to fill the 16:9 screen. A rough idea on how to reproduce this issue would be to play a 4:3 video on the YouTube channel on my model of the device (though as this is a system issue, any 4:3 video on any channel should do) and then play with the Picture size settings. The sides of the 4:3 video should be cut off in the Stretch mode and not the Auto, Direct, andor Normal modes. I would like for this issue to be fixed by reversing whatever Roku did in the February update to make the Stretch function stretch twice (or some similar solution), as everything concerning aspect ratios was fine prior to that. TECHNICAL DETAILS Model: Insignia Roku TV 5302X model NS-32DR420NA16 Serial number 2N00AC760184 Software version 7.0, build 9051. Have you contacted Roku technical support yet We should keep addressing this issue to Roku to fix the problem soon. Please let me know if you find a way to resolve this issue. Thank you. Its not just the stretch its also ZOOM verticle seems to zoom properly but horizontal still cuts off the sides. ![]() Its rather irritating as I like to stretch and zoom a lot of things for various reasons but I cant use that feature. Except 4:3 Youtube videos tend to be smooshed and not wide enough and the TV doesnt seem to allow stretching Youtube.
